Rope bondage safety

Here's a little safety lesson in bondage!
To start, this is one of the best sites out there for those who want to learn about rope bondage. They have knot instructions you can download, great videos, beautiful pictures and are incredibly creative.
Safety equipment: I recommend some heavy duty scissors and a flashlight. If there’s going to be candles, fire or wax play, I suggest a fire extinguisher as well.
The scissors are for those horrible moments when you realize your bottom isn’t doing so well and needs out NOW. There is no time to untie your intricate knotwork, you need to cut your rope. And though you may love your rope and it might be that wonderful, soft Japanese rope… cut it. Your bottom’s safety and trust in you is the most important thing.
The flashlight might seem paranoid, but if the power goes out when your bottom is suspended above the ground… you’ll need to be able to see them to help them escape.
As always, drugs or alcohol do not mix well with BDSM.

The dangers of rope bondage:
Restricted breathing
This one is very important, and though it seems obvious, it can be something you wouldn’t think about until it’s a bit too late. I’m not just talking about not using rope around the neck. If the diaphragm is bound tightly, it can cause breathing difficulty. There are certain ties that should only be done sitting, standing, etc. Monitor your bottom carefully.
Nerve Compression
Pinched nerves aren’t sexy. If your bottom can’t move their hands or feet they need to be untied or cut free immediately.
Panic or sleepiness
Yes, these are on opposite ends of the spectrum, but both are fairly common reactions to rope bondage. Some bottoms feel sleepy and reach subspace very quickly. They’ll be fairly useless when it comes to walking or making decisions. Others will feel panicky or fearful. Rope bondage is very much about trust and it can be overwhelming for a bottom if it’s taken too quickly. Help them keep calm and let them out if need be.
Circulation
Your bottom should be able to feel all parts of their body at all times. If they’re turning colors, let them out. This isn’t as serious as the others, but if it lasts too long it can become a problem. You can check their circulation with a fingernail check.
Simply press on a fingernail. It will turn white if you put some pressure on it, but it should return to normal quickly enough. Try it on yourself. If the fingernail stays white, something either needs to be loosened or untied.
Locked Elbows or Knees
If your bottom locks their elbows or knees, their blood flow changes quite a bit. This can lead to fainting, so make sure they’re relaxed and can bend enough to prevent this.
Rope Burn
Fairly obvious. Try not to pull the ropes along the skin too quickly. It’s nice and sensual if you do it slowly. There’s no need to rush.
Stiffness and balance
If a bottom has been in one position for too long, they might be stiff. Help them walk when you’re done tying them up. They might also be in subspace, so make sure to take good care of them. Some bottoms aren't even able to speak after a good bondage scene.

Now onto the fun stuff:
Kinds of rope
  1. Hemp or Jute- Rougher texture, harder to find in large quantities, tends to be stiffer. Made from plant fibers. Can be boiled in a pot of water and hung to dry. Do not use soap and do not boil them more than once or twice a year.
  2. Cotton- Easily found in hardware stores, etc. Can be rough, but softens with time and washing. Can be machine washed in cold water, if tied in a pillow case or something else to protect the washing machine from horrible tangling.
  3. Nylon- Soft and durable. Easiest to find. Also machine washable, in the same way as cotton


You can hand clean any kind of rope, just with a dry cloth to get off any dust, etc.
Store your rope somewhere dry and out of the sun and if possible, hang it up. Coil or wrap it to keep it from tangling

How much rope is needed for what I want? That depends on what you intend to do. 
'It's common for people to have:
two 12ft pieces for tying limbs together
two-four 25ft pieces for tying limbs to bedposts and such
at least one 50ft piece for body harnesses
Generally, rope that is .25inches/6mill or less in diameter is good for tying wrists and ankles and rope of thicker diameter is good for body harnesses.’ – Rope Bondage Safety Site
